Muons versus Hadrons for Radiotherapy

چکیده

Intense low energy muon beams – as part of a muon collider complex – may become available for use in radiotherapy. It is of interest to compare their effectiveness in this application with that of hadron beams in a setting where processes common to these beams are treated exactly alike. Detailed simulations of physics processes for muon, proton, antiproton, neutron, kaon and pion beams stopping in various media have been performed using the MARS code with newly developed weighted algorithms. Special attention is paid to μ−, π−, and p capture on light nuclei. Calculated distributions of energy deposition and dose equivalent due to processes involvingprimary beams and generated secondaries are presented for a human tissue-equivalent phantom (TEP). The important ratio of dose delivered to healthy tissue vs dose to tumor is examined within this model. The possibility of introducing heavier elements into the tumor to increase capture of stopped μ− is briefly explored.

Azimuthal asymmetries of charged hadrons produced muons off longitudinally polarised deuterons at COMPASS

Azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of positive (h) and negative hadrons (h) have been measured by scattering of 160 GeV muons off longitudinally polarised deuterons at CERN. The asymmetries were decomposed in several terms, according to their expected modulation as a function of the outgoing hadron azimuthal angle φ. Each term receives contributions from one or several spin and ...

Spectra of Hadrons and Muons in the Atmosphere: Primary Spectra, Characteristics of Hadron-air Interactions

Self-consistency of interaction models QGSJET 01, SIBYLL 2.1, NEXUS 3.97 and QGSJET II is checked in terms of their ability to reproduce simultaneously experimental data on fluxes of muons and hadrons. From this point of view SIBYLL 2.1 gives the most acceptable, though not quite satisfactory, results. Analysis of the situation for muons supports our previous conclusions, that high-energy muon ...

Searching for Heavy Quarks at NMC: A Simple Estimate of Background Muons from π and K decays

New physics can be searched for in deep inelastic scattering experiments. New phenomena, like additional production mechanisms for heavy quarks, manifest themselves through production and decays of short-lived hadrons, which give additional muons in their decays. Muons from decays of light mesons can then be a severe background, especially at fixed target experiments. In order to make a first e...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Measurement of attenuation lengths of hadrons in air showers with KASCADE

Different methods are applied to derive the attenuation lengths of hadrons in air showers with the KASCADE experiment. A data set of unaccompanied hadrons is used (where only a hadron is registered with a calorimeter) as well as full air showers, where also the number of electrons and muons is registered with a field array. The different attenuation lengths obtained are discussed.

Seasonal variation of atmospheric leptons as a probe of charm.

The intensity of TeV atmospheric muons and neutrinos depends on the temperature in the stratosphere. We show that the energy dependence in the 100 TeV range of the correlation with temperature is sensitive to the fraction of muons and neutrinos from decay of charmed hadrons. We discuss the prospects for using the temperature effect as observed in gigaton neutrino detectors to measure the charm ...
